Distance to Desire
Distance to Desire
dating apps are low status
- "you met your shawty on hinge you aint shit" – Llainwire (2023)
- Dating apps are becoming low status not because the desire to meet someone has changed, but because an interface has flattened the route into an optimized default: the destination is the same, while the distance, agency, and story of getting there have been chosen for you.
disintermediation
- Digital environments are no longer just representations downstream of physical life. They are primary environments in which meaning is made.
- AI will lead to the final disintermediation and thus represents the final state we are now in, where maintaining distance becomes the last battle.
who's in control
- Technology can mediate your life in many ways; health devices make this visible by turning sleep, recovery, movement, and bodily experience into scores interpreted by an interface.
- There are ways to fight back: single-focus devices set a clear boundary around mediation by doing one thing and leaving the rest of your life outside the interface.
story mode
- A story can organize experiences and decisions that would otherwise feel disconnected.
- So step one to building status is finding a story that suits you.
If stories are how we navigate, what's mine?
